Ben Around the World Diary – Day 47 – 20th September 2018

Up at 5am before sunset. On the road with the overnight lorry drivers and nobody else. Seeing the sunrise. The earth turning imperceptibly yet methodically like my wheel. It’s a real surprise to see someone coming the other way with a loaded bike. Today I passed three separate riders. Each time waving across the highway divide. As the maze of Europes roads funnel into the highway of Turkey. I’m one of many riders traveling the transcontinental routes.

Today at lunch I stopped on a shady side road. As I unpacked my sandwich materials a small boy came running towards me. He couldn’t have been older than 8. Him and his brother were sole in charge of about 20 bulls. I gave him a cake and tried some sign language as I ate my sandwich. I was just totally fascinating to him. A creature from another planet. As I lay down to sleep he collected his brother who by his movement brought the herd. No sleep for me then. His amazed face looking up at me will stick with me for ever.
