Ben Around the World Diary – Day 50 – 24th September 2018

Today I’ve felt very down on Turkey and Kurds. After the stone throwing incident yesterday – this morning a young man shoots a cap gun out of the window as they pass. I’m so used to this now. Kids shout as I pass but I keep headphones in and pedal faster. Only with the older men do I stop and engage.

The day was a real day of climbing. From 800m the lunchtime before up to a lake just 50km from the boarder. Here I came across a tremendous campsite. Trees on the bank of a lake. The rest of the scenery is sparse. It takes me a minute to decide what to do. I was in a real zone cycling. At the same time I don’t want to camp near the militarised border. Making the decision to stop early I feel a rush of happiness. Quickly I undressed and jump in the lake. It’s freezing! I’m out within 30 seconds and drying in the pavilion next to my tent and bike. I have about three days to get to Tbilisi so some time to rest and catchup on reading is welcome. I’m looking forward to being out of Turkey. I’m looking forward to a break from the bike. But this campsite is a real boon. Time to put dinner on I think.
