Ben Around the World Diary – 25th May 2018

I woke and opened my tent door as the morning mist rose from the trees as smoke from a tinder. The forests of western German are deep shades of green and glossy from the regular rain. The scenery didn’t help the fact I’d had the worst night sleep so far and a banging headache. For some reason as soon as I lay down my nose became totaly blocked up and haven’t managed to sleep a night through yet. To keep myself going I listened to my favourite podcast Do By Friday for two full hours rolling downhill along the flat railway path I joined yesterday.

At lunch things began to climb and I reached a 100m hill outside a village, continued to reed Uprooted and tried to sleep but a man with two out of control dogs sat at a bench below. Shouting commands into the air as his bulging white Staffy continued to disobey.

By the afternoon the incline got silly. From the flat railway paths my guided route on Kamoot took me up a pedestrian path in the centre of a town what got my heart rate raised to the max. One reason not to blindly follow sat nav hey. With the humidity I was sweating buckets. I’ve still got a Belgian ferryman’s words ringing in my ears, “You need less stuff mate”. Perhaps I can find a way to post my paraglider ahead to a trusted source in Turkey or India. I’m scared I wouldn’t be able to climb these kind of hills at all of the road surface was gravel.

Tonight I’m the most exhausted yet and my batteries are all low so I’m contemplating a hostel or warm showers in the next couple of days. But first I’m eating the last of my food that I carried all the way from London. A tin of Beans and mixed grains. In one pot. What a treat! Oh and a protein shake to save the legs.
