Ben Around the World Diary – Day 150 – 15th November 2019

– ODO- 18673-18803km
– Location- Hoi An
– Weather- 25-29 showers

Today was my final day cycling with George. Despite the standard rainy season forecast we dodged the rain and the rush our traffic streaming from Hue. After a week on the road we’re used to the highway. Excited to finish we stopped rarely to eat our pre purchased snacks and pushed right on to are big challenge of the day – the ridge separating Tan Tiên state from Da Nang state.

The road split away from the highway and the climb began. A layer of sweat formed and the humidity fueled it until our shirts were dripping. Over a few false peaks we continued to climb. Around each corner the number of tourists increased each time greating us with a wave or a condescending clap. After barely half an hour the peak came into view. Our promised view of Da Nang was blocked by stalls selling coconuts, water, cigarettes and cheap jewellery. Immediately we were hassled to buy water or food. We picked the quietest stall and settled into our peanut butter sandwiches.

The last 50km was a battle. We wanted to be at the house. To not have to cycle for a week. At the same time I was sad that our time cycling together was over. Everyone who’s joined my journey has influenced me in some way and helped me to enjoy the time on and off the bike even more. George has been an exemplar if that.
