I was looking forward to flying in a balloon. As a kid I would be riding a scooter down the lane or playing with toy planes in the garden on a Sunday afternoon you’d become aware of a chatter coming from above. Looking up to the sound of the paraffin burner. The biggest I remember was a huge, red and branded Virgin. We’d sometimes be at Earlam Park walking the spaniels earlier in the day and see them being setup. The shapeless spread of cloth gaining form from electric fans and then the expansion of the paraffin heated gas.
But if you’re involved with aviation for any amount of time you understand that you’re always at the mercy of the nature. The wind too strong or too weak or from the wrong direction. Too much cloud or not enough. That’s why you can tell a pilot by my the amount of time they spend looking to the sky. Even if they’re supposed to be paying attention to something important like the road… or a partner.
Needless to say I didn’t get to fly in Cappadocia but the stop was worth it for the incredible Grand Canyon like scenery and history.
