Auroville

I’m writing today’s diary after nearly a week in Auroville. I’ve rarely used my phone all week and my laptop has remained untouched in my bag. I’ve been drawn in by the spirit of Auroville.

The Joy Community in which I’m staying is a collection of hand-built huts and cabins. My hostel room is a large steep-roofed building thatched with weaved palm leaves. The second and third floors are built with and connected by ladders of bamboo. To reach the second floor you climb a ladder from the second-floor room. Above the simple mattress in the floor hangs a square mosquito net. The floor bounces gently below your feet.

For the first day, I sat under the mosquito net reading and dreaming. Surrounded by the sounds of birds from the forest. Watching the shaft of light move across the ceiling from the triangular window. Feeling the sea breeze rippling the net and cooling my skin.

The second day I began to speak to the other guests. Meeting for the first time some of the other characters on the experience Auroville program I was there to attend. What struck me right away is the openness of everyone I’ve met. This township attracts a specific character who wants to share their passions and love for life. It extends beyond the house too. Sitting in a cafe or visiting an art show or film screening were all opportunities to meet new characters from around the world. After just a few days I have a network of friends. It’s easy to feel at home here.
