Ben Around the World Diary – Day 72 – 16 February 2019

– ODO- 8849 – 9088km
– Location- Hotel in Kovalam, India
– Weather- 26-30 Hot and humid

This morning I had a tough choice. I’ve picked up a stinking head cold from too much laughing yoga in Auroville. I tried to extend my hostel stay for an extra night but I was too late. The place was already booked up with weekenders coming into town to take advantage of the low alcohol tax on Pondicherry – an ex-French colony.

I was hoping that I’d wake up refreshed and my noise would stop streaming. Instead, I slept restlessly and woke in a pile of tissues just after 7 am. The first leg of my route up the centre of the country goes along the coast towards Chennai. I decided then to get on the bike and take advantage of the abundant cheap hotels on the OYO app when I felt tired and didn’t want to continue.

I’ve taken it extra easy. Slow pace on the flat ground. My cousin told me it’s the first day of spring in England. And here, unfortunately, I can start to feel the heat building also. 26 degrees at 8 am and humid. And it’s only been building as I ride. So as I sit here for my second Idly and Dosa of the day helped down with a warm Masala Milk (“From Native Cow Breed” with a blend of Turmeric, Pepper and Honey). I’ve picked a cheap hotel about 40km down the road. I’m hoping to reach it around 3 pm and spend the rest of the day washing my clothes and chilling in bed.
