Ben Around the World Diary – Day 85 – 1 March 2019

– ODO- 10822 – 10922km
– Location- Gwalior, Utter Pradesh, India
– Weather- 15-25 degrees

I shouldn’t have trusted the hotel food. Last night I spent the hours between 2-4 am riding cramps in bed or sitting on the toilet. This makes my fourth stomach bug in so many month in India. There have been other incidents but I’m not convinced a lot of those weren’t caused by excessive chilly the night before.

The plus is that this time I was in a hotel. I’ve got so used to the procedure that after a little extra layin and some tablets I considered my options. The day ahead looked to be cool and mostly flat. As I approach the populous north there is an abundance of hotels. So I set my sights on a hotel 100km away – two-thirds of my usual distance these recent days – and set out at a slow pace. So far I’ve been making nice and steady progress with rehydration salts in one of my bottles and a steady supply of packed biscuits. I’ve just had a lunch of aloo paratha – a potato-based pancake – that comes off the grill reassuringly hot. I’ve got 30km to finish the day nice and early and hunt our something more reliable than hotel room service to fuel me tonight.
