Today I’m tired from my hundred miler yesterday. Everybody seem moody and I don’t have as good chats as I’ve had so far. Or maybe people are just becoming less friendly down here. I asked at a petrol station to fill my bottles from the sink and the face I got was a picture. The woman filled one bottle about half way and then went to serve another customer. In this kind of mood I could tell if it was me or everybody else to I carried on and got a big sleep at lunch.

As I approached Austria the mountains veered up in front of me. I knew what was coming. The traffic in Salzburg was crazy and getting out of town was worse. The major roads have one cycle way which swaps sides at random and annoying points and sometimes stops all together for a stretch. I climbed out of the city, the route took me into a side road, the most steep road I’ve climbed so far. I got half way and ended up wheel in the verge. Without a way to build momentum I pushed the rest of the way and followed the main road from now on.

After climbing to 750m I was rewarded with a spectacular view of lake Fushisee below. This is Austria. As the things get darker quicker in the mountains there was little light by the time it reached 8:30pm, my usual stopping time. I’m camped on a forest clearing a few meters from the road. It’s a good spot through as I’m on the crest of this particular pass. Now to make sure I’m fed and watered ahead of the biggest climb of this leg, up to 900m tomorrow after my breakfast decent the lake below to ease in the legs.
