Phnom Penh – Ben Around the World Diary – Day 158 – 3rd December 2019

– ODO- 19757-19872km
– Location- Phnom Penh, Cambodia
– Weather- 28-32 high altitude cloud and haze

Today the highway continued to the capital. The surface improving as the traffic worsened. In frustration I shouted “wanker” at the top of my voice into the window of a Toyota Camry who overtook a truck on my side of the road and passed me at full speed less than a meter from my bags, only noticing as he sped past he was wearing a military jacket with lapels heavy with stripes. I pulled off near a temple to cool off, eat and apple in the shade of an elephant statue to avoid a diplomatic incident. It’s no use. I have to go with the flow.

The capital is a cross between the jammed swirling traffic of Hanoi and the grid streets of Tokyo but on a small scale relatively speaking. After finding my hotel – I’d picked the ugliest one I could find on google maps hoping it would be cheap (it was) – I headed out on foot to sort my sim card (from Unitel), supplies for the coming cycle (from Lucky Supermarket) and some vegan food (from HIVE). Now I’m all set.
