Vietnam is not a dog lovers country. I thought that the idea of Vietnamese eating dogs was a stereotype until a few days on the highways here. There are fewer street dogs than in neighbouring countries. Dogs here seem friendly and families and hotels often have a prize pet tied up outside. On the highway it’s different. Mopeds go by with mesh cages of placid smiling dogs heading for dinner. The worst, matching the big pig trucks being hosed down in lay-bys, was the great truck George and I saw a couple of weeks ago. Hundreds of these same mesh cages stacked on the back. The sounds of barking from inside the mass. The smell.

I became vegetarian for fully selfish reasons – it’s the simplest way to cook and eat healthily. Seeing the suffering these animals go though doesn’t make me want to go back.
