As the temperature hits 36 degrees in the middle of the morning I hop from sheltered cabins to convenience store stoops, drinking constantly and instantly sweating it out. The surface of my skin, a dark glistening sheen of sweat and dust picked up from the highway along which I battle into a relentless headwind.
Frustratingly, the audiobooks I have are mastered too quietly to be heard above the trucks on my open headphones so I’ve gone back to the second season of a podcast called The Dream. The first series was an in-depth run though of “multi level marketing” – the now legal pseudonym for pyramid schemes which are growing with impunity across the states.
The second season takes a much more personal tone as the host, Jane Marie, and her partner explore vitamins, supplements and alternative therapies from Goop to natural childbirth. I’ve always been relatively healthy but I was never too invested in health and wellness. I just ate what I liked and got my exercise cycling a lot. Since I started cycling around the world though I’ve become more aware of influencers in Instagram and certain prominent podcast hosts pushing supplements and alternative treatments. I’m definitely suceptible to some, like taking vitamin C when I feel a cold coming on. My thinking has always been, fuck it, I’ve only got one life so if I can take something that might help make my diet more healthy, why not. This podcast has me rethinking.
